Description

On 2 December 2021, UN OCHA and DG ECHO hosted one of the six sequential launches to present the 2022 Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) for the third year in a row. The Brussels launch focused on expanding the resource base in a context where climate change compounds the humanitarian funding gap.
The event underscored the need to identify incentives and solutions, which could help diversify and expand the resource base for humanitarian assistance in view of soaring humanitarian needs in 2022.
It explored the initiatives that traditional and non-traditional donors can undertake in order to encourage a better sharing of responsibility in addressing growing humanitarian needs, demonstrated how humanitarian partners have managed to mobilise alternative funding, and how international finance institutions, the private sector and development actors can contribute to diversifying the funding sources.
The speakers identified the main approaches and areas for progress, doing better on preparedness, scaling up anticipatory action and responding earlier and faster. These efforts need to be complemented with increased investment, adaptation and risk-informed sustainable development.
The discussion zoomed into potential solutions and priorities helping expand the resource base for humanitarian aid but also highlighted the centrality of partnerships and increased collective responsibility in reducing the global needs, building up momentum for action ahead of the European Humanitarian Forum in January 2022.
