Magartu, a 16-year-old Ethiopian refugee lost her eyesight at a young age. Magartu was only eight when she and her older brother and sister fled Ethiopia due to conflict.
When they arrived at Kenya’s Kakuma camp, her siblings immediately enrolled her in primary school in the camp. Despite her disability, she scored top marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education national examinations in 2021 and graduated as one of the top learners in her primary school in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
She is now on a UNHCR scholarship at a local high school and is determined to finish her studies and enroll in law school. Magartu’s achievement inspired many other students with disabilities to believe in themselves.
