
Nestor Owomuhangi, a national of Uganda, has been engaged in humanitarian and development programs for more than 26 years, mostly with UNFPA and the UN system. Prior his appointment as UNFPA Yemen Representative in September 2020, Nestor served as Deputy Representative for Yemen from July 2018 to August 2020; as UNFPA Deputy Representative for Iraq (2014 – 2018); as UNFPA International Program Specialist in Lesotho (2008 - 2014) and as National Officer with UNFPA and on secondment to UNHCR in Uganda (1999 – 2008). Prior to joining the UN, Nestor worked with various national institutions and international NGOs in Uganda.
Mr. Owomuhangi possesses a rich experience in the humanitarian field, having spearheaded UNFPA’s humanitarian efforts in Iraq following the liberation of the city of Mosul from ISIS and now in Yemen where he has successfully positioned UNFPA as a key humanitarian player in the reproductive health and gender-based violence fields as well as ensuring UNFPA’s leadership of the Rapid Response Mechanism through which UN’s frontline relief assistance is provided to populations fleeing fighting.
