
Sonja Belete is an adult education and development expert with more than 30 years’ experience in the fields of adult education, sustainable livelihoods, women’s economic empowerment, good governance and systems building.
Ms. Belete holds a MA degree in Adult Education and has authored several manuals, guidelines and articles, the latest a series of booklets on building sustainable Adult Learning and Education Systems across sectors and spheres of governance. Her career with international NGOS such as ActionAid, CARE and also the UN provided her extensive exposure to Southern and the East/Horn of Africa, with occasional support missions to West and North Africa. Until July 2021 she held the position of Regional Director for the East/Horn of Africa with DVV International, a German NGO specializing in adult education projects and programmes. She has managed large scale programmes, including projects with refugee and cross border populations. She currently works an independent consultant for organisations such as DVV International, Welthungerhilfe and UNESCO (UIL).
