
Ursula von der Leyen has been serving as the President of the European Commission since 1 December 2019.
She has been a member of the Bundestag since 2009, and served as the Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs from 2009 to 2013. She served in the Cabinet of Germany from 2005 to 2019, holding successive positions in Angela Merkel's cabinet, most recently as Minister of Defence.
Von der Leyen is a licensed physician, having graduated as Doctor of Medicine from Hanover Medical School in 1991.
